Amazing what you can do…

Despite our son deciding not to take a nap at all today, Kay and I still managed to find time to read through the rest of the Flash Fiction submissions. Let me tell you, it was HARD to choose! Our first go-through of 80 submissions still left us with 26 under consideration. We had to do several more re-reads before we’d finally pared it down to 10. And there were a good dozen submissions that didn’t make it which were good enough that we’d have been happy having them as finalists too. Excellent quality submissions!

I spent a solid 2 hours prepping the website, and it’s ready to go, so the 10 finalists will be up and voting will begin TOMORROW! Voting will be open until 11:59 PM (US Eastern time) on Tuesday June 30: The winner and 3 runners-up will be announced on July 2.

By the way, a couple of flash fiction submissions brought us today’s Things Not To Do When Submitting: Don’t ever submit fanfiction! While the legality of writing fiction based on other people’s work for fun is still up for debate, profiting from such fiction is plagiarism and very very illegal. ANY fanfiction submissions will be automatically discarded unread and without notice.

(Note: we actually like fanfiction and consider it a very useful tool for writers to develop their skills. A good friend of ours, Jean Johnson, was discovered because of her fanfiction and is now a national bestselling author. I myself have actually written over half a million words of fanfiction, and I am a far better writer because of it. But we also like Crossed Genres very much, and would prefer not to be sued out of business.)

I didn’t have any time to work on the Print edition of Issue 8, unfortunately. I did exchange a couple more emails with contributors though, so that’s just about wrapped up. I think I’ll have time to wrap up the print edition formatting tomorrow.

Also: keep those Issue 9 submissions coming, folks!
