Editing is not like playing God

Editing is not like playing God, but those two very different things do have one tiny small aspect in common: You have to use a light touch.

In case you hadn’t guessed by now, tonight was an editing night. As I was editing along through one of our Urban SFF stories, I found myself trying to think of something I could compare that process to.  Something that speed-paints a mental picture of howI try to put a few finishing touches on an already fine story without leaving my grubby handprints all over it.  As it were.  After a while, an appropriate line from an episode of Futurama came back to me.

God:  If you do it right, people won’t know you’e done anything at all.

(And if you’re a fan of the show, you don’t need me to tell you that line is from the scene in which the robot, Bender, has a little chat with God about how the whole ‘God’ thing works.)
