Tell him about the Twinkie

Today I monitored a bunch of ad bids we made on Project Wonderful. I continue to be fascinated by the process, and I kind of wish I could afford to make more ad bids just to test various techniques. Alas, we can hardly spare anything for advertisement. We did get a pretty nice boost in traffic as the direct result of ads we had up today; as a result, some of our ads got a nice boost in what people were willing to pay. I could easily become obsessive in learning to work the PW system, if we had the money.

I also enjoyed seeing who chooses to bid on ads on our site. I was especially pleased to see an ad from GUD make an appearance – they’re a pretty fascinating magazine themselves. There’s one of their ads up there as I write this.

This evening I created the PDF Edition, start to finish. It’s mostly a conversion of the Print edition files, except everything has to be resized. I now have 5 PDF files that I’ll merge into one tomorrow (I don’t have a full Adobe Acrobat at home – it’s too expensive. But I have it at work).

Resizing the cover art and redoing the title is a bit annoying. This month I didn’t mind, though; the cover art is gorgeous, but its proportions are too “tall”, and I had to crop out a lot to make it fit for the Print edition, which I hated to do. But the PDF is a taller format, so I was able to leave more of the image in. Of course, when the online version is released you’ll be able to see the entire uncropped image, which is astounding.

Tomorrow I’ll see about tackling the Kindle edition. I also have a couple of people to email regarding possible articles for future issues. One of them is a writer whose work I’ve been devouring for more than 15 years, so getting up the courage is tough.
