Submissions

Science in My Fiction is accepting science fiction story submissions. We will be publishing one story per month on the website. Each year the stories will be collected in an anthology and published in print and digital formats.

Fiction Editor: Bart R. Leib

Guidelines

  • 1000-6000 words (FIRM). Unpublished work only.

  • Inspired by a scientific discovery or innovation. A URL to an article about the relevant science must be provided. (The article may be from ANY time, unlike the Science in My Fiction contest, which required the article to have been published within the past year.)

  • Standard Manuscript Format is preferred. Use a basic font like Times New Roman or Arial (Note: Courier is evil.)

  • No reprints. No simultaneous submissions. No multiple submissions.

First and foremost we’re looking for good stories with compelling characters. We also want to see how creative you can get with application of and extrapolation from the science which inspired the story. Some things we are NOT interested in:

  • Apocalypse stories. Do not send us stories in which science brings about the Downfall of Man, “If only we hadn’t been so blind!” etc. Doomsday SF has been done to death.

  • Science-as-villain. Stories in which the terrible things happening to the character(s) are all science’s fault. Science is not an evil character; for the purposes of fiction, it’s a device. And in case you couldn’t tell, we’re pretty pro-science around here. (NOTE: this is not to say that we only want happy stories. Just don’t blame science – blame those who misuse it.)

Compensation

Accepted stories will be paid a flat rate of $25, plus a print copy of the anthology when it’s released.

Rights

Crossed Genres/Science in My Fiction takes First Online Publication Rights for one year, after which time the author may request the story be removed from the site. We also take non-exclusive First Print & First Digital Rights (for the anthology) for two years. Print/digital rights revert to the author two months after the anthology is released.
