Short Stories

Short story submissions must contain elements of both the current genre and Science Fiction and/or Fantasy.

What are we looking for? There is no hard-and-fast rule; any story that follows the above guidelines will be considered. We tend to favor character-driven stories, but that doesn’t mean we won’t appreciate a strong action piece. Make your characters fascinating and your plot engaging.

Things we want to see MORE of:

  • Queer characters
  • Characters of Color
  • Women MCs
  • Disabled characters
  • Science saves the day!
  • Far future
  • Stories set outside North America

Crossed Genres strongly encourages submissions from writers who identify as people of color, women, and members of the LGBTQ community. It is our desire and intent to have diverse representation amongst our contributors and within our content.

Articles

Nonfiction article submissions should focus on the current month’s genre, Science Fiction & Fantasy, or some combination of the two. Our definition of “focusing on” is pretty broad. If the genre is Space Travel and you happen to be a rocket scientist (or an amateur astronomer), you probably have something to offer here.

Artwork

Inside art (black & white) should be Science Fiction and/or Fantasy. Inside art can be in any proportions. Please send a medium-resolution image; if we accept your artwork we will ask you to provide a higher-resolution version. Note: We are accepting photography/photomanipulation submissions for our final issue!

Audio/Podcasts

We are accepting podcast submissions for our final issue! Please send audio no longer than 15 minutes. If you can’t email it, you can send a link to a box.net or dropbox download.

Due to limited time (we work full-time jobs, too!), rejected submissions will probably receive a form letter via email. We apologize for these impersonal responses; they do not reflect on the quality of your work!

Rights

Crossed Genres takes Exclusive World Online, ebook and print rights for one year.

Compensation

Fiction, poetry, articles, podcasts and inside art that are accepted for publication will receive a flat payment of $10 USD. Contributors will also receive a free ebook of the quarterly publication in which their contribution appears. Contributors will be given the option to purchase copies of the quarterly print publication in which their contribution appears at a discount.

If you still have questions on how to submit, please email questions@crossedgenres.com. Do NOT send submissions via email!
