Crossed Genres welcomes and strongly encourages submissions with underrepresented main characters: women, characters of color, LGBTQ characters, characters with disabilities, etc.!
Anthology: Open Submissions (Short stories)
Strong, united families are rarely portrayed in SFF. They’re often dysfunctional, combative, self-destructive, or miserable, when they’re portrayed at all. This is especially true for non-nuclear and adoptive families – single parent families and families with no children are easy targets for invalidation.
And QUILTBAG families are almost never portrayed in SFF at all, regardless of whether their families are loving or falling apart.
Two birds, one stone.
We want stories in which at least one member of the family is QUILTBAG. They can be families of any constellation: all sizes and configurations, families of choice as well as families by birth. The families are caring and connected – when outside conflict arises, they come together to defend and aid one another. Fiercely, and without hesitation.

[...] A day or so after Outer Alliance Pride Day, in honor of which I posted an excerpt from my novel-in-progress Mistress of Woodland,[Ref #1] I read on Outer Alliance’s blog that Crossed Genres, a monthly science fiction/fantasy magazine published both online and in print, was accepting submissions for an LGBTQ issue to be published in December.[Ref #2] In fact, Crossed Genres, itself an Outer Alliance member, had posted a version of its call for submissions as its own Outer Alliance Pride Day post.[Ref #3] Submission deadline: September 30. If you write SF/F with LGBTQ themes and/or characters, give it a look & consider submitting some work.
